Topic: Women's Awareness: Have you HERD? A Discussion on Ovarian Cancer
Led by: Shannon Routh of Teal Diva
Shannon Routh
Shannon was diagnosed with Stage 2 Clear Cell Ovarian Cancer in 2009 at the age of 32. Ovarian cancer does not run in her family, and she was an outlier in many ways. During her treatment, she struggled with feeling heard. That same year, after her third round of chemotherapy, she founded Teal Diva, an organization to empower women battling gynecological cancers.
Since founding Teal Diva, Shannon has established all-inclusive retreats for women battling these cancers, as well as the Teal Diva Fund at Novant Health Presbyterian Cancer Center. Additionally, she has coordinated fundraising events such as the Teal Diva 5k in Charlotte, NC and Charleston, SC, Teal Masquerade, and Cooking For a Cause.
Shannon has told her story, and the effect of gynecological cancers on women and their families in over 25 speaking events across the U.S., many at Universities teaching young women about the importance of gynecological health. Shannon also wrote the forward to Love After Cancer by Keesha Carter, and she has advocated for women’s health on Capitol Hill in Washington DC several times. She was also nominated by her peers and served on a panel as a voting member, along with prominent scientists, to determine how $20M appropriated by Congress for the 2018 and 2021 Fiscal Year would be spent on cancer research.
Shannon has been married since 2006 and has both a rescue Maine Coon Cat and cattle dog. She loves gardening, live music, motivational quotes and witty sayings and would love to live on a farm one day with adopted animals. The quote she lives by is “What you Permit, You Promote.” Her dream is to see every inch of the world.
For a start, she climbed Mt Kiliminanjaro – two years after her cancer diagnosis.
