The Matthews Heritage Museum, 232 N. Trade Street, is pleased to announce the opening of the next exhibit If Elected: Political Buttons and Memorabilia on September 24 in time for the final weeks of our presidential election. It will feature a collection of buttons, statuary, and other items that have been a part of presidential campaigns throughout the years. A wide variety of both democratic and republican memorabilia will be on display. Come and cast your vote for your favorite! Among the earliest items is an elephant statue from the 1928 presidential election of Herbert Hoover. Also featured are Reagan cufflinks, Kennedy playing cards, a peanut pin for Jimmy Carter and a plate from the 1968 Miami Republican convention. Even a patriotic beanie baby and a stuffed donkey dog toy from the 2012 campaign will be on display. Buttons and pins have been a part of election culture since the United States’ first presidential inauguration, when metal pins bearing the phrase “Long live the president” and George Washington’s initials were worn by his supporters. The first mass-produced and collectible buttons for presidential campaigns didn’t come around until 1896, when William McKinley ran against William Jennings Bryan. Due to newly inexpensive printing technology, and low costs for the materials needed for the buttons, candidates could afford to widely distribute them and use them as true campaigning tools. In addition to the above items numerous pins and buttons from the past ten decades of presidential campaigns will be on display. Recall the presidents and their running mates. The exhibit will be on display through November 12, when our next president will be known. The Museum is open Thursday – Saturday from 10 to 4:30 p.m. Admission fee charged. First Saturday of every month is FREE.
