David W. Butler High School is located on 74 acres in Matthews, a community east of Charlotte which is a major metropolitan city located in central North Carolina. David W. Butler is a community-based high school which is a part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Operating since 1997, the school was named in honor of David Watkins Butler, an outstanding teacher who perished in a house fire while saving the lives of his family. During the 2011-12 school year, the school was designated as a ''School of Distinction with High Growth'' and one of only 72 schools in CMS to meet all AMO targets.The school also met 20 out of 20 goals for 2011-12 fulfilling federal guidelines for No Child Left Behind. In 2014, David W. Butler High School was recognized by US News and World Report as the #1 high school in CMS and the 5th highest rating in North Carolina.
